# Artisan's Roll

The Artisan's Roll is a peer-to-peer barter protocol. It is the in-person deployment mechanism for the [Coded Craft](https://justinhammack.com/methodology/coded-craft.md) philosophy: an instrument for trading work for work with other practitioners, on the ground, without money intermediating the exchange.

## What It Is

A small, curated kit of authored objects — a record one made, a route one documented, a tool one finished, a print one composed — carried with the intent to trade, never to give. The objects in the Roll are not promotional gifts and are never used for prospecting. They exist exclusively for exchange with other makers who carry their own work and want to trade.

The Roll is a working object. It is meant to circulate.

## The Protocol

**Discovery.** The other practitioner shows their work first, in their workspace. The exchange begins with the trade partner's craft, not one's own.

**Recognition.** A genuine response to what the maker has shown. Recognition is not flattery; it is the demonstration of having understood what the work is.

**Reveal.** Only after recognition, the Roll is opened and a few items are offered for consideration. The Roll is presented as a working kit, not a sales display.

**Exchange.** The trade is decided by both parties. The selection is mutual: each maker chooses what they want from the other, and each can decline. Money does not enter the exchange. Quantities are typically small — one or two objects each.

**Follow-up.** A note within forty-eight hours, naming the object received and how it is being used. The trade closes in continuity, not in courtesy.

## Cadence

The Roll is meant to circulate slowly. A working target is one to two trades per quarter. Higher cadence dilutes the protocol — frequent trades signal the items are casual, which collapses the value of the exchange. Lower cadence is acceptable; the Roll should never be deployed reflexively.

## Why It Exists

A trade between two makers, of two authored objects, in person, with no money in the exchange, creates a relationship of a specific kind. It cannot be replicated by purchase, by gift, or by social media.

The Artisan's Roll is the operating instrument that produces those relationships at usable cadence, without forcing them and without devaluing them.
